What the Logo...?
In the latest news : AMAZON FULFILLMENT, WROCLAW, POLAND has successfully teamed up with AMAZON.es to produce an absolute fiasco of a service.
AMAZON.es managed to lose an order for the entire COMMONWEALTH series by Owen G. Richards then, with the release date for the first book looming large on the horizon, they managed to get the second order deliverd.
And what a delivery it was.
A flimsy cardboard envelope which failed to protect the books, one of which was seriously damaged, was married to the extremely poor quality of the finished product.
The books, seven in total, were of varying heights. The variance in height was up to four millimetres!
** MORE NEWS AS IT COMES IN **
This book was the most seriously damaged of the seven.
RESURRECTION is the first book in the COMMONWEALTH series.
The release of this series has been postponed.
Author Owen G. Richards was severely disappointed when his "author copies" were finally delivered. They were all of different heights and one of the covers had been damaged in transit. The collection of seven books from the COMMONWEALTH series had all been stuffed inside a flimsy cardboard envelope which proved inadequate when it came to the protection of its contents.
This second attempt at delivering the goods as they were ordered, was due to the fact that Amazon somehow managed to misplace the original order. This resulted in a fourteen day delay in the delivery of the books that had been ordered to enable Owen to prepare for the release date of the first book in the series.
Ironically it was this first book that was most severely damaged when the second delivery was received.
Having thoroughly discussed the issues with Amazon.es, Owen was passed to Amazon logistics. Apparently, this is a separate company, as is the printer, Amazon Fulfillment, a company based in Poland. The efforts of the "support" staff to resolve the problems was underwhelming. It would appear that they are all "jobsworths" and it couldn't possibly be their fault as there was another company involved. The irony of the company names all being Amazon, totally having escaped their limited grasp.
Owen has stated that a third order has been placed with the recalcitrant Amazon.es with every intention of returning the books if the same problems occur.
He assures the Chronicle that he will repeat the order and return process as many times as proves necessary for the company to realise exactly what it is costing them both in fiscal terms and in terms of their failing reputation with their clients.
If they got it right first time, every time, the costs incurred by all parties would be significantly reduced and their fragile reputation would be dramatically improved.
Life or Lifestyle?
Doodles, Sketches and Scribbles
As so often happens nowadays, I recently faced a crisis of choice.
I had to choose between "lifestyle" and "life" - lifestyle being the part that we all view as being the joy of choosing what to eat, whether or not to exercise and how we manage the high levels of stress that everyday life imposes on us, plus, of course, the wonderous constraints of the pandemic.
It's at this point I hear you cry (in King Julian's voice) "What happened?"
I had developed a rather serious deep-vein thrombosis, and had allowed my blood-sugar levels to increase to the point where I was borderline diabetic.
Too much sitting around, which included working from home and writing as well as the resting we all need to do when we get tired, and then there was my predilection for sweet foods and sweets.
The lifestyle was killing me.
So, I immediately made the choice not to take sugar in my tea, or coffee, and I avoid eating sweets, chocolates, etc. At first it was difficult but all I had to do was monitor my blood-sugar level to remind myself it was an oh-so-necessary evil.
Then there was the treatment for the thrombosis. Holy shit! I had to inject anticoagulant into my stomach on a daily basis to quickly reduce the risk of further clotting and a worsening condition. I will tell you now, I NEVER want to have to do that again.
That treatment was replaced by a medication called Sintrom. This continued the process the injections had started, and believe me it is a far better way to put anti-coagulant into your body.
I also had to take the decision to get off my butt and walk, simply to exercise the leg that was most at risk. For the first few weeks it was as painful as it was frustrating to have to force myself into a simple habit of exercising. After less than one hundred steps, my leg felt like every muscle was cramping.
I'd had, what I thought was, a cool lifestlye, an easy lifestyle, maybe even a comfortable lifestyle, but it was killing me.
Despite the ease with which I have discussed it here, making the choice for life, not lifestyle hasn't been easy. It requires patience by the ton and perseverence by the truckload. It also helps if you have a supportive partner, and mine has been a godsend.
You know exactly what I mean. Those pieces of art we produce when we allow our minds to wander and the pen, or pencil, takes on a life of its own and produces images, sketches, scribbles and doodles.
Why is it we have the habit of discarding these things, when some of them can truly be regarded as art?
It's probably because we've been educated to believe that art is a very special talent only for those who study the techniques and materials of drawing, painting, modelling, fabrics and many other miscellaneous items that are used to produce what is called art.
We may not all be artists, but we do possess an artistic talent which may not be readily perceivable.
Clothes designers are artists. Chefs are artists. Construction workers and architects are artists and the list can go on and on. We all have a talent for something.
My favourite artists - though this is not an exclusive thing - are the cartoonists who create characters and deliver both humorous and serious messages to their readers, in some cases simply by observing the way people behave.
At one time a reviewer of some of my writing accused me of... **big word alert** ...anthropomorphising my characters. No big deal, you might say but I got the impression that it wasn't meant as praise. But to hell with that, I took it as such.
People and animals share many behavioural idiosyncracies, which makes each group reflect the other at times. People can be as stubborn as mules, as proud as peacocks, as cheeky as monkeys... and animals can be far more empathic than many humans.
Just ask my little buddy - Mr Fuzzy.
Well, you could if you were able to get him to take his nose out of the newspaper.
Not very loyal is he? That's not even the Chronicle he's reading!
The COMMONWEALTH Series.
The original release date of September 1st was too close when the books were finally delivered. Had they arrived in good condition as a result of the first order, it might have been met.
RESURRECTION, the first book in the series, will now be released on September 13th.
After a long, and uninspiring drought in terms of sales, Owen has recently discovered there has been a resurgence in the sale of his previous publications.
Neither Here, Nor There, published at least two years ago, has been purchased twice in recent weeks.
A review, which has barely passed the Amazon scrutiny process reads as follows :-
"I love that it's written in the first person,
it feels like you are really in there with
Billy and Digger.
Great book, easy to read, and leaves you
with a warm, fuzzy feeling.
"Can't wait to read more from this author."
The rating?
The other of his previous publications, A Fool's Errand has also been purchased.
He has yet to discover if this has as well received as Neither Here, Nor There.
His enthusiasm is tempered with a degree of quiet concern - Ok... maybe not so quiet. He's worried. As all authors are when waiting for a review.
HAIKU CORNER
What the young ones know
is nothing of consequence
to those who have lived.
What the old ones know
is nothing of consequence
to those who have not.
Stress.
It doesn't sneak up on you.
It grows.
Sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly but almost always imperceptibly.
Then your safetly valve blows and you pack away whatever it is that's driving you nuts and do something totally different.
Which is exactly what Owen did.
He went fishing on a private charter and spent from 07:30 to 09:00 on a boat, without a mask, and he caught his dinner. Three small, but still good-sized, Bonito were brought home, and two others, which were undersized, were returned to the sea.
And by all accounts, dinner was excellent!
As a side project, Owen has developed this 'local rag' as a means of boring the pants off people. He wanted to disseminate whatever news he had but didn't want it to be too plain and uninteresting.
The logo at the top of this page has been slung together to emulate the wonderful crests that so many newspapers bear.
It was a fun little project to undertake and one that I am likely to repeat as I often tinker with graphics programs as I teach myself how to make better use of the tools that are available to me.
For this little gem, I used Paint.NET, which is free graphics software and, as I am discovering, is very versatile.
And as for the motto of the crest... "Scribere quid cogitas" - I think it works. Maybe you will too, when you know what it means. Who can say?
Despite all the unsettling feelings that I anticipate when returning to places where I spent a lot of time, I found this return to be a pleasant surprise.
The Online Writing Workshop (OWW) for SciFi, Fantasy and Horror writers is a place where I benefitted from the generosity, patience and kindness of the majority of those who reviewed my work for me.
Not only was their advice useful, it was always delivered in a way that was impartial, and so, it never left me feeling that they had mauled, or savaged my work - which was an impressive feat as my writing in the early days was - let's just say - not good.
But my learning was not limited to the content of the reviews I received. I also learned by reading and reviewing the works of writers that I considered to be far more accomplished than I would ever be.
Reviewing the work of your peers allows you to know what is good and what is bad about your work, and balances this against what you see as being good or bad in the work of others.
My latest visit has confirmed that the same high standards apply today as they did when I was a regular contributor to that workshop.
MORE NEWS LATER
When the buzzer sounded at around 13:00 on Saturday 11th September, Owen hurried to answer it.
Then, with more than a little trepidation, he opened the door to receive the package from Amazon. With the delivery accepted and the door closed, he examined the packaging. Once again the books had been delivered in a thin cardboard envelope, which had suffered the rigours of the journey and survived, though the dented corners did not inspire confidence, and the gouge marks in the front were carefully inspected before the packaging was opened. That was the moment of truth.
One by one the books were removed from the envelope, which each one being scrutinised for the slightest sign of damage. There was none.
All seven books were stacked up and the sizes checked for any variations in the height or width.
There were none!
All seven books had been produced to the same specification, the same trim sizes and the same quality, which is how they should have arrived when they were first ordered. Needless to say, Owen was not far short of ecstatic.
He will not, in future brook any delays, production or delivery failures from Amazon as it is clear that they are capable of delivering on their promises.
More Fishy Tales
A little more information to back up the claims
made regarding the fish that were caught on
Thursday 9th September.
Owen is no chef, by any stretch of anyone's
imagination. His partner, however, is much
more worthy of that title.
Before
After
When they were cooked and ready to eat, neither
Owen, nor his partner, thought to take a picture
before they dived in and ate every last crumb.
The taste was wonderful and the texture was
similar to that of tuna, which makes sense as
Bonito are members of the tuna family.
#SatSplat Hashtag
"Fear"
For those who are not aware, this is a Twitter hashtag challenge issued every Friday night / Saturday morning for people to write short stories in a single tweet, related to the prompt word.
'Tis neither darkness, nor silence
concerns you.
'Tis not cold, yet your skin prickles.
Sound emerges from silence.
Steals ever closer.
Breeze stirs your hair.
Shivers dance along your spine.
Adrenaline driven heightened senses
lead you to #fear.
This weekly event is hosted by Craytus Jones (aka Bob Johnson) @craytusjones and everyone is welcomed.
Proofreading?
What a simple, straightforward question it appears to be when you first glance at it. What is proofreading?
The answer, however, tends to vary depending on their perspective and, sometimes, their own somewhat special requirements.
Surely, proofreading, is the reading of a text with a view to correcting any errors and to propose any improvements that could be made whilst maintaining the tone of the original text.
Now, you will notice no formatting of any kind has been included. No headers, no footers, no paragraphs, no table of contents and no tables. Nor does it include the verification of the accuracy of the data contained within the document - that being the remit of the author.
The moral of this little rant is, "don't trust the job title" find out what the job actually entails before you get roped in to doing something that goes way beyond anything the title implies.
There are certain to be a number of editors out there who are nodding their heads in agreement. An editor may perform proofreading as a part of their remit, but a proofreader could hardly call themself an editor now, could they?

After Commonwealth comes Warlord
This is the follow-up series to Commonwealth and as the title of the series states, it involves a Warlord. Progress to date has two books already completed and the third is in progress. It is anticipated that this series will also require seven books to tell the tale, though that figure may vary depending on the how the characters let the story unfold.
Much more to be told and many more obstacles to be circumvented in order to confront the Warlord.
What's Next?
In terms of the Commonwealth series the answer is RENEGADE, the second book in the series will be published in the very near future.
In terms of the follow-up, that's a whole new series entitled Warlord, which takes us beyond the Commonwealth. The first two books have been completed, and the third has started, though it has been temporarily shelved whilst the first series is rolled out.
Anything Else?
Owen would like to mention the fun and games that he gets up to on Twitter, which is somewhat reduced of late. He used to participate in the daily exercise of writing something for the #Vss365 prompt.
That's Very Short Story for 365 days of the year - 366 for a leap year, of course. For the most part this has been a useful tool for the sharpening and tightening of his writing skills. Obviously better writing is needed to create an awesome impression on others in just 280 characters (and that includes the hashtag - #Vss365).
But it's not all short stuff if you play the game Owen used to play.
He'd start with a single tweet and build up a thread that told a complete story from end to end. But, with only one tweet being written each day it would take almost six months to write the longest of the stories. He says he will turn them into published books one day.
"Walker", "Paladin" and "Colosseum Survivor" are the three titles produced one tweet at a time.
A Teacher's Lot...
It is incredible how the number of teachers, native and non-native speakers, are available to give English lessons these days.
With many of the "pandemic" generated newbies seriously under pricing their lessons they are unlikely to be professionals picking up the slack in their regular workload. Many appear to be ordinary people with some knowledge, maybe even regular use, of the language who have taken it upon themselves to become teachers in order to supplement their reduced, or non-existant income.
Whilst there are some very competent non-native teachers out there in the world, there are many who learnt the language from other non-native speakers and consequently pass on the bad habits they were taught.
Pandemic, or not, Owen seriously recommends that anyone wishing to learn any language, whether it be English, French, Chinese, Arabic, etc., should take lessons from native speakers to avoid the bad practices so often passed on by non-native speakers.
How else could you possibly learn all of the idiosyncracies of whichever language you are learning? Particularly when it comes to phrasal verbs and idioms!
Oh, in case you missed the drift of this particular piece, teaching English happens to be his second job, and it is based on both knowledge of the language and the experience of teaching the Spanish, the Chinese and the Indonesians, whilst at the same time learning of the mistakes their non-native teachers have made.
This is a Twitter hashtag created by an incredibly courageous and amazingly supportive individual - Aspen Brave - as she is known to Owen and many others. Every week seven new prompt words are provided to encourage and challenge people to confront issues of interest to the world.
Owen will not presume to tell her story as he fears he could not do her justice.
Oh, this is sure to stir up a hornet's nest of opinions, isn't it? Particularly when I try to tell you there are no hard and fast rules, despite what everyone else tells you.
What the whole world is so busy pointing out at every opportunity, is that we are all different. Apart from that being so damned divisive in so many ways, it is also a common point for all of us. How Stephen King works is the way that works for him, as it would have been for Agatha Christie, and George R.R. Martin, and you, and me.
Before you protest, no way should we compare ourselves to those already immortalised in print (and film), it's really not a problem. We all have a way of doing things that suits us, and our circumstances, right?
Sadly there are some rules which, whilst they aren't one hundred per cent rigid, they are pretty damned useful when you're trying to write something for people and they keep being distracted by TRYPO's, MISPRONTS and Gramma'ical errors. It could be worse, you might use the wrong word, the consequences of which could just as easily be offensive as funny.
So why bother, you ask.
Suffice to say, she has inspired, challenged and supported him at various times, which has included supporting the writing of a five-month thread that produced a complete story, on more than one occasion.
Prompt words for this week.
Sep 23: Efflorescence
Sep 24: Plexure
Sep 25: Fight
Sep 26: Coalescence
Sep 27: Chrysalis
Sep 28: Drummer
Sep 29: Cordolium
Owen is certain that he is not alone when he says 'May your kindness and generosity be returned a thousand fold, Aspen. Thank you for being you.'
NaNoWriMo
"National Novel Writing
Month"
Not everyone has a dog, a cat, kids, a partner, etc. Not everyone feels supported in their efforts, and not everyone can set aside the time to write, but must steal every precious minute they can get to use for their craft.
The real challenge is how to make the most of the time that we have available to us. This may mean developing an entirely unique way of doing your thing. Authors, particularly those with other commitments, have to be as flexible and adaptable as they possibly can.
They also need to have their own system for organising things which need to be done. Those with a reasonable level of income will be able to pay others to do editing, proofreading, illustrations, cover designs, etc., whereas those with less money available tend to have to do as much as they can themselves.
So remember, when you ask someone the best way to write your stuff, what you're really asking is "what works for them?"
Now, go get that information!
There are some pretty wonderful advantages to 'playing by these rules'. You are more readily understood, and your audience is less prone to confusion. Plus, any editor you hire will not be quite so reluctant to take on your manuscript if they know they don't have to pull their hair out because of repetitive, avoidable errors.
That said... isn't that what those poor editors charge for?
Yes, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to make their lives easier in their efforts to help your work to be a shining example?
If in doubt ask around, and do include using the resources of the internet as they are so abundant. However, there is a wee caveat to that. Not everything 'out there' is correct or accurate, so collect as many answers as you can and then go with the majority. But do be aware of the differences in the spelling and grammar that is used in different countries. Everyone calls it English, but there are subtle differences, not only in spelling but also in the grammatical approaches.
For example - who uses "I wish he had done something." and who uses "I wish he would have done something". Subtle hint, the Atlantic separates them.
Last word (until the next one), write the best you can, always try to improve and don't worry if you can't get it, because all that really matters is that your editor can understand it well enough to correct it. *Sorry editors!*
An annual event from November 1st to November 30th in which writers are challenged to work towards producing a novel length story by writing 50,000 words in that time.
Yes. It can be done, particularly when you know it's coming and you have time to prepare - which Owen didn't know was permitted.
When Owen did NaNoWriMo in 2016, he hit November 1st without any preparation and went on to write a 60,000 word novel in less than the permitted thirty days, entitled The Awakening. It has yet to be polished, but it is on the list of completed works to be published.

Take whatever answer you receive and try it, then keep what works and trash what doesn't. Your way of getting those words written may only be a few steps away. But don't stop asking, because there might a better, or easier, way of doing whatever it is you want to do.

There once was a person who wrote books,
who just couldn't find the right hooks.
They'd struggle each day
to order words the right way

Writing: Full or Part Time?
Some swear by being a full time writer, whereas others only dream of it. Which is the best option?
That's a personal choice.
What's the difference between them?
Would you prefer to keep writing as a serious hobby, or could you do it as a full-time job?
Your answer will depend on your skillset, your resources and your available time. The more you can do, the more time you need. The more money you have, the less you need to do.
Whatever option you choose, may your writing be the best you can manage and may your writing entertain and delight many readers.
FORTHCOMING RELEASE
RATINGS vs REVIEWS
This may be a contentious issue for others
and not just for Owen. A rating is all
right, but it's just a number with no other
value associated with it.
So, the question has to be asked. What value
is placed on a rating without a review?
From the perspective of an author it's not
worth all that much as it tells the author
nothing useful about why the value was
assigned, no reason, no excuse, no apology,
not even an accusation.
But for a prospective reader it's an
at-a-glance indicator as to whether a book
is worth their time, money and effort.
At least with a review you get a feel for
what is good, what is bad and what is
mediocre, simply because the reader has
taken the time to pass comment and express
whatever it is that has affected their
opinion of the story.
It is incredible that people will rate a
story, but not comment as to why they are
rating it.
One individual declared their marking
scheme very simply.
1) I hated it, 2) I didn't like it,
3) It was Ok, 4) It was good,
5) It was excellent.
And that's it as far as that person was
concerned. It doesn't matter to them how
the rating is perceived, that's just the
way they use it!
30 days of #VssMurder start Oct 1st!
What does that mean? To answer that question, I'll pass you over to Migs (aka @OminousHallways) one of the current eight (yes eight!) murderous hosts.
In September 2020 two members of the Twitter
writing community had a discussion about
possible prompt words with a murder theme. With
(October) the Halloween month approaching, a group
of writers decided to convert the idea of writing
prompts based on murder words into a month-long
event for the community.
The @vssmurder account was set up, and each day in October 2020 a murderous prompt was provided to inspire writers.
Not too surprisingly, the writing community
embraced the concept of #vssmurder. However,
submissions in October 2020 exceeded expectations
in terms of their volume and quality.
The idea that this would be a one-month, one-time-only seasonal prompt was challenged by fans who wanted more.
The #vssmurder hosts decided to continue the challenge as a monthly prompt, with a 4-day MurderWeekend each month, with a return to daily prompts for October.
#vssmurder returns to the community now, in October 2021, for a full month of murderous prompts.
The current hosts are :
Migs (@OminousHallways)
Jana (@janajwrites)
Steph (@StephiSimone)
Natalie (@nreillyjohnson)
Maria (@MariaAPerez1)
Mark (@IncognitoKorps)
Carrie (@CjdHerts)
Keshe (@KesheWrites)
If you enjoy chills and thrills I recommend you play along with these people. But be wary, they are very good at this and you could end up being their next hapless victim!
As with most Twitter challenges this is bound by the limitations of a single tweet. However, that doesn't mean you can't stretch your capabilities and try to create a thread for the entire month. It would be an interesting way to start writing a horror novel!
Next Step After A Series
So, a series has ended and is being published and you are left wondering what is next? For some it means preparing for the next series. For others it means starting a new story altogether.
Either option is good, providing there is no overshadowing from the original series - unless it's a follow-up to the first one.
The trick is to be able to divorce yourself from the last mind-warping, soul-consuming, eye-straining task, and whilst it is not obligatory, it is a suggestion worth considering, simply because it is as valid as leaving a story to "settle" when you complete the first draft.
This will allow you to approach the new task with less chance of other characters, or storylines, interfering with the development of your new concept.
However, if you are lucky enough to have a follow-up to the orignal series then keeping all those interfering memories of the original story, cast, and scenes is of great benefit.

'TIS SAID THAT A PICTURE PAINTS...
...a thousand words, and perhaps this is true. But
why would a writer need pictures? For the cover? Yes,
of course. As illustrations? Perhaps. The main reason
I take the time and make the effort to produce
drawings/sketches/schematics is to use as a tool to
assist me in maintaining continuity. The "little"
beauty you see below is the "Tierra del Fuego" a
pan-galactic transport vessel that the "Resurrection"
- the tiny looking craft to the right - has to rescue
from pirates and then salvage what they can. This
includes jettisoning some seriously damaged pods, and
fixing the engines to escape from a decaying orbit and,
of course, that means they're working against the clock.
"Resurrection docked with the Tierra del Fuego"
Then there's the Resurrection itself. It looks pretty
small when compared to the Tierra del Fuego, which is
appropriate for illustrating the differences between
the two vessels. So, let's have a slightly closer
look at the Resurrection. This is a schematic to
remind me of the levels, the rooms, the stairs, the
turrets, the drop tanks, etc. This is the place that
Tommy McNulty comes to call home.
"Resurrection schematic showing all five levels
of the 'Flying Brick' as she is known."
ART EQUALITY FOR ALL
ART EQUALITY FOR ALL - is is a registered charity 501(3) dedicated to the continuing mission of providing low-income artists and special needs children digital and artistic tools to help them create.
In today's world, digital equipment is necessary for the creation, promotion, and distribution of nearly all forms of art. It is the vision of this charity that no artist should be barred from expression solely due to their lack of access to modern tools. Art Equality For All aims to provide such tools to these individuals to help bridge this gap whenever possible.
But it's not just artists who can benefit from having access to digital equipment. Research suggests that for many special needs children, art can be used as an effective part of a treatment plan. Unfortunately lack of access to this equipment limits these possibilities for low-income families and those that are raising children that could benefit from having the right equipment.

To quote her words: Reasonable rates, fast turnaround time, and no BS!
"EVERYONE HAS A VOICE WE WANT TO LISTEN TO"
"What The Book" is a series of interviews with indie
authors about all things related to indie authors.
The idea for WTB came to Dzintra Sullivan over two
years ago and in her own words: "What The Book"
loves Indie authors. It dedicates each episode to
interviewing a different indie author each week. It
spotlights creators who refuse to take 'no' for an
answer. It's humorous, entertaining, and sometimes
sexy. It also encourages authors to tell their
stories, do a little dance, and get down with the crew.
The crew? Dzintra - @DzintraSullivan,
Kia - @kia_crystal and Marc - @authormbdavis.
When? 19:00 EDT Saturday.
On WTB they welcome authors of all sizes and shapes.
From writers of their first novel to seasoned writers;
those with big followings or small platforms the crew
don't care because "Everyone has a voice we want
to listen to".
Dzintra started it because she felt the need to give
back to the community that had given so much to her.
She saw a lot of authors struggling to get their
names seen, to be given traction, etc. She knows that
sometimes hearing an author talk about their books
helps people relate, connect and hopefully become
regular readers of the author.
She set up WTB to give authors access to a platform
that is normally unavailable to them.
Each interview is based on completely organic chat.
Dzintra doesn't like scripts or planned conversations
as she would prefer the listeners hear an author at
their ease in a relaxed situation. It's like a
conversation that you might have when you're sitting
around a table, sharing a beer at the local bar. No
one ever knows where the conversation will go, and
some truly fascinating things have been revealed
about our author peers.
They have produced over 100 episodes to date. With
over 50 being produced on Podbean, the current
platform, which is recorded live when the interview
takes place with a live audience. Earlier episodes
were produced using Anchor. But having a live audience
is much more fun.
Once recorded the episodes are uploaded to Spotify
and YouTube. You can search for them or visit
@WTBPodcast for more information.
Marc enjoys an adult beverage of some kind for each
episode, most commonly a beer, he also states that
at the end of every episode they play a fun game
just like Family Feud that they call "Booker Feud".
The question usually pertains to the guest in some
way. Dzintra takes up the role of host and finds a
question from Family Feud along with the top 5 survey
answers. He and Kia are on opposite sides and the
guest can select which side they want to join. It's
always fun and there is plenty of trash talk.
In a huge stage aside he adds "I win almost every
week", which may not in fact be true, but it will
drive Kia crazy."

A VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND
This was the view of the harbour and the bridge from the Auckland Tower.
I have fond memories of some of the strange, wonderful and truly beautiful things I encountered when I visited the top of the North Island.
This cheeky devil let me get just close enough to start getting my camera ready. But I was too slow. He ended up giving me the side-eye from the depths of his sanctuary in the crevice between two huge boulders, mumbling something about paparazzi.
Almost clear skies for this late evening shot just after
the sun had gone down over the horizon.
No breeze and pleasant temperatures considering it was
just after the New Year had begun.
When I first saw this stack of books I had no idea what it was. Beautiful, highly polished Kauri wood had been carved to form a stacke of books, right? Wrong! The top book opens out to turn the stack into a coffee table worthy of any writer's sweetest dreams. But, no matter how many times I counted coin, there wasn't enough to buy it, let alone ship it back to the U.K.
This "teeny-tiny" beach bears the magnificent name "Ninety-Mile beach". Whoever named had allowed their imaginings to exceed reality. But I can definitely tell you it is a very, very long beach. I never did find out exactly how long it was. At least, not until I asked Google. It's actually fifty-five miles long, all of it beautiful, soft-on-the-feet sand.

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT, THEN?
Well, originally it was just a means of moaning about
things like Amazon screwing up an order, and other
perceived injustices. No, seriously... it was
that limited in purpose. However,
that purpose evolved and the content became more
oriented towards issues that affect most of the
writers on Twitter. Things like the meaning of the
hashtags, their origins, etc. and the various
exercises and practices behind them. Other items of
interest will be such things as practical and more
affordable alternatives to mainstream applications
and programs, such as Adobe products.
It may be called "A Writer's Chronicle" but it's not
just for one person, as it is open to submissions of
various kinds - submission rules can be found via the
index. The newspaper will be used to showcase selected
tweeted works posted in relation to the various
hashtag prompts, and these will be available for a
week at a time, making those tweets easier to find
and reference. It is published once a week at around
22:00 Madrid time. So, what does it cost? Nothing.
Nobody pays for anything. Access to this is 100% free.
No payments, no subscriptions, no charges of any kind.
Where content is not provided/proposed by members of
the writing community, the editor will make approaches
to individuals in order to ensure there is sufficient
material for the subsequent edition. Whatever the means
of acquiring the source material, all rights remain
with the owners of those materials.
A 5-tweet thread
The echo of applause has long passed and I sit in the
dressing room of the theater with the man meant to tidy
things up after shows like mine. He tells me stories
of his time on this earth, and in this role, when a
woman holding a small case knocks on the door. "Mr. Oak?"
"Yes."
Her shoulders soften, face almost turns to a smile.
"I've been looking for you."
My new custodial friend looks concerned, I pat him on
the back. "Don't be troubled. Most of my conversations
start this way."
"I'm sorry to interrupt," she says. "But I have
something to show you."
"And I have a job to finish." My friend stands and
offers his hand to me. "Nice to meet you."
"The pleasure is all mine," I say as he leaves and
the woman replaces his absence in the room. She puts
the case on the makeup table, opens it to reveal an
old, worn bottle with no markings.
"A bit late for that." I hold up my own drink.
"My name is Dr. Gibsin, I work with the Dutch Oceanic
Research Council."
"You're a DORC." I can't help but smile saying this,
she's not amused.
"Six years ago we found a shipwreck off the coast of
Norway, perfectly preserved."
I motion to the bottle. "I assume that was found there."
"The bottle is strange enough to be found with an
ancient wreck, the ship predates glassmaking by a
century, but stranger still was the letter sealed
inside."
"A message?"
"Yes, Mr. Oak," she said. "It's addressed to you."

Submission Rules
This publication is dedicated to providing information
to writers, poets, artists and anyone related to the
art and craft of producing finished product for public
consumption in the form of books, written works,
drawings or paintings.
Submissions can be discussed with Owen @Owen_G_Richards
prior to submission, but the decision to publish the
content lies with Owen.
Items that circulate information for the benefit of
others within the writing/painting/drawing
communities will be given preference over any
unrelated articles.
Submissions may be written, drawn, designed, illustrated
or even photographed.
Items outside the sphere of the arts described above may
include brief holiday descriptions with recommendations
from personal experience, unusual work undertaken,
humorous events/incidents, extraordinary tasks, anything
which might be reasonably considered of interest to the
community.
NO BLATANT ADVERTISING will be accepted, other than for
registered charitable institutions, or services to the
community. Unfortunately, the announcements of
forthcoming publications for individuals will not be
included. The mention of a forthcoming publication as a
general comment will only be supported if it refers the
reader to the individual's twitter profile. All that said,
I am open to suggestions for other materials/sections in
this publication.
ARTICLES FOR FUTURE EDITIONS
I am already requesting articles from potential
contributors which may include "Fantasy map
designing", "living with trauma" and "my day job"
(where the work might be intriguing, some might
say 'monumental'), but these are yet to be confirmed.
There are certain areas of the writing community
that are under-represented here, which is mainly due
to my lack of involvement in those areas. That does
not mean that these genres/areas/topics are excluded.
If you have any articles tweets, stories, anecdotes
to share then do, please, submit them for consideration.
This is meant to be a publication for the entire
writing community, along with artists, editors, cover

IF EMPOWERED, HELP OTHERS BE HEARD
With the kind permission of the actor Claudia Black
(@TheClaudiaBlack), her thread related to
safety on a film set is reproduced here. The incident
that provoked this commentary was the death of Halnya
Hutchins, and the injuring of Joel Souza on the set
of "RUST".
This is NOT being published to get political about
the incident - that is for the mainstream press to
do. I have asked permission to publish this because
of the humanity that is so clearly demonstrated in
the wording of Claudia's commentary. A humanity
that so many in positions of power and popularity
so often choose to ignore or forget.
"If you're an aspiring actor, and as my advice was
good enough for a young Mcavoy I pray you'll listen
now. When we were filming Pitch Black a producer
came to give me a choice. They had a problem and
needed to do a reshoot with me and a stuntie. The
shoot thus far had been rough; the crew was
exhausted. 6 day weeks are unsustainable. Mistakes
happen when crews are tired and often on the 6th day.
The crew couldn't say "no" to another Saturday but I
could. I asked when they needed a decision and went
to speak with some crew. I made sure that they
themselves were choosing -rest vs an overtime
paycheck- I would not presume to know their needs and
priorities. They chose safety and rest.
"Safety First," is after all, an oft heard
refrain on any decent set with its priorities in
check. I returned to the producer and told him I was
too tired and didn't want to work the Saturday. He
looked at me for a few seconds. I was a good actor
and a bad liar. He went to say something, nodded
instead and rescheduled. We do a lot of things on
sets that would otherwise be illegal. It can be
thrilling. It's a privilege.
It should never cost a life.
I was in my early 20s when I was asked to make that
decision ostensibly for me though realistically on
behalf of many. Thankfully I live without regret. For
30 years I've been working with firearms consistently
and never once referred to a firearm as a prop; it's
a deadly weapon.
Actors get infantilized on sets then criticized for
childish behavior. I don't care what number you
are on the call sheet. Lead. From the back of the
pack if you have to. No job nor career is worth
a life. I have pulled stunts early in my career when
I could tell they were dodgy. Your stunt double is
there to make you look cool but they often do not
feel empowered to speak up. Check in with them and
use your voice. It's not about heroism it's
about humanity and navigating frustrating and
fateful hierarchies. Whenever I have weapons
training and they ask if I've had experience with
firearms, after 30 years I still say, "Yes, but
assume I know nothing and teach me everything." (I
am repeatedly told by armorers and stunt departments
that women are easier to train because they do not
think they know everything.) "Beginners Mind" will
keep you humble and others safe.
Film culture is unique. Our days are more 5-9 than
9-5. We work on a 24 hr clock and in TV and indie
filmmaking, time is the enemy. We hurry up and wait
right before we rush to complete the call sheet and
before we lose light. We are carnie folk; the kids
who didn't fit in; rebels, outliers, misfits,
neurodiverse arty farties. We are a circus that packs
up and leaves once the film or series is "in the can"
never to reassemble with the same people in the same
way again. We experience little deaths in our hearts
every time we wrap. Processing that grief and post
shoot anticlimax is part of the gig after bonding
closely with fellow wild ones hired to recreate some
aspect of humanity, only to disperse and move on.
We should never be grieving an actual crew member's
preventable death when playing make believe. Play
requires the safety of a responsible container. The
producers are in charge of that. They need to set
up that container, nourish and maintain it with
crystal clear communication. They need to listen
and actually care and follow through. They need
to identify toxic behavior and address it head
on. For too long people who consider themselves
to be "non creatives", have indulged toxic and
unsafe behaviors because they think it goes with the
territory of being arty and are terrified that if
confronted, the artist will walk off and filming
will stop. So in this tipping point moment and on
this two-way street; actors, please, prioritize
being good people before being a great artist.
Put the crew first. Speak up. Cultivate an
environment of verbal consent. I offer consent to
male artists now and they are confused at first by
the offer. Persist. You can always find something
that a male actor does not like having done to his
body. And once you establish that baseline, all the
off-air scripts change; vulnerability is better
understood. Safety first. Because from safety,
comes great play and beautiful art; delicious
co-creation. If you create great art in spite of
toxicity it's a tenuous, unrepeatable, unsustainable
and lonely phenomenon. So listen. Observe. Ask
questions. Check in with the crew and make *them*
cups of tea. Ask them how you make their jobs hard
even though movie stars aren't supposed to.
I am devastated about Halyna. Walking onto a set on
Friday morning right after reading the news, I had
to work yet again with firearms and a wobbly, yet
fiercely professional, stunt department. We had a
top armorer quite literally in the trenches with us.
As I stepped onto the muddy set I turned to the
armorer and said, "I'm so grateful you're here." I
turned to the courageous and dutiful stunties,
asked if they were ok and said, "If you see or feel
something today that worries you, anything, and you
speak up and are not heard, find me and I shall
speak, *loudly*". Relative safety and art should be
mutually inclusive. It's where the secret sauce
resides. It's where true cinema magic is cultivated.
The set is my home. If it's yours too, treat it as
you would, the safe haven it deserves to be,
especially for those of us who never found a home
anywhere else."
My response to Claudia, who I couldn't miss when
she co-starred in the SciFi series "Stargate SG1"
and "Farscape", and (with apologies) I had to be
reminded of her role in "Pitch Black"...
Normally I am not one to cheer celebrities, I've
been a fan of your various works, and whilst
celebrities are not my favourite people, I HAVE TO
make an exception for you after reading this. Much
respect to you, and many thanks for demonstrating
such empathy and compassion for ALL those who work
alongside you.
And she still gave me permission to produce this.
Thank you, Claudia.

I've been in
an accident-
My car
a crumpled mess
My passenger
is headless
There's blood
all o'er her dress
Her ghost is standing
next to mine
and she looks
quite pissed
I think cuz
this tragedy
means party
will be missed
I'm in Hell
cuz I will never
hear the end
of this.

I always braced myself for Gran's hugs. She didn't
mean to, but she always #hurt me. I felt like a
bird, each tiny bone on the verge of breaking.
But that's how she did love, big and enfolding.
Gran's the little one now, wings fragile and
flightless.
I hug her gently.

We push through twilight hand in hand, pass dark
nooks and lone figures. Together, we laugh at the
stories - the #hurt, the missing.
Nearly home, she stops, presses me against a wall,
kisses me.
"You scared?" she says.
My reply is stifled by her blade.
"And now?"

If a business manages to stay open for a century
or more, it is gifted many opportunities to play
a part in the history of the surrounding locality.
So it is where I work.
I work at the Joseph Kavanagh Company.
The Shop, as we call it, began on April 9th, 1866
when my great-grandfather's Uncle Joe (pictured to
the left), who I am named after, opened a
coppersmith's shop in Baltimore.
His first years were difficult but the business
got busier and Joe hired his nephew to work for him.
He trained both him, and before long, another nephew.
Joe's skills became valuable in the burgeoning
alcohol industry and he was able to expand his Shop.
In the 1880s, Joe heard of a copper colossus being
built in New York. Intrigued by the idea, he traveled
there to offer his services. Joe was hired as a
rigger for the Statue of Liberty's construction.
He was a stoic man but even he felt a great sense of
pride at his very small involvement in the project.
However, when things were at their peak, tragedy
struck. In 1904, the Great Baltimore Fire destroyed
1500 buildings in the city including the Shop's
Lombard Street building. Joe and his nephews watched
it come down after salvaging what they could.
The next day Joe was just as determined as the City
to go on. Temporary facilities were rented and the
family returned to work. Sadly, Joe died ten months
later never knowing that his business would rebound
so well.
The nephews took control of the Shop but it was no
easy transition. A few years of disputes led to there
being two Joseph Kavanagh companies. In the end, his
nephew also named Joe prevailed.
It took some time for him to get his feet on
the ground, but he was able to have a new building
constructed on Central Avenue and it became the Shop's
home for over 90 years.

ARTICLES FOR FUTURE EDITIONS
I am already requesting articles from potential
contributors which may include "Fantasy map
designing", "living with trauma" and "my day job"
(where the work might be intriguing, some might
say 'monumental'), but these are yet to be
confirmed.
There are certain areas of the writing community
that are under-represented here, which is mainly
due to my lack of involvement in those areas. That
does not mean that these genres/areas/topics are
excluded. If you have any articles tweets, stories,
anecdotes to share then do, please, submit them
for consideration.
This is meant to be a publication for the entire
writing community, along with artists, editors,
cover designers, etc.

Make a contribution, either via a direct
submission or a recommendation for the
works of others.
All *polite* suggestions considered.
The Kavanagh's primary source of income was the alcohol
industry but that all stopped when Prohibition became
the law of the land. Over 50% of their work went away
in one day. Of course, they did what they had to do
and went into the booze business for themselves. They
started off small but were quickly making more cash
than expected. It came to a halt after two years when
one of their bootlegging associates who was married to
Joe's niece was involved in a robbery and murder.
There was a manhunt, a trial then several prison breaks.
The Kavanagh's were questioned over and over but they
truly knew nothing of the murder as it had nothing to
do with the whiskey trade. When Prohibition was repealed
and the Depression was over, those crazy years ended as
a sense of normalcy returned to the Shop.
Business picked up on Central Avenue as the third
generation took control and through the 40's and 50's,
the focus was distillery work again, but they began
delving into rolling or curving metal for structural
and ornamental purposes. Eddie Kavanagh ran the place.
His son Jack was top coppersmith. Unfortunately by the
1960s, the distillery work moved out of Baltimore. The
company changed its focus becoming a metal bending and
rolling shop. Constructors, welding shops, fabricators
and even sculptors began to knock on the door at
Central Avenue.
In 1988, The Shop passed from my father to my brother,
sister and I. Like our predecessors, we work as well as
own. We get our hands dirty every day. In addition to the
structural curving we do, we bend for furniture makers,
museums (Smithsonian and Rock 'n' Roll Hall
of fame), display builders, and film and TV companies.
If a film or television show was filmed in our area,
there's a very good chance we were involved with prop or
set work.

WRITING COMMUNITY RALLIES
On Nov 3rd we witnessed some incredible courage from
one of the 'pillars' of the writing community. Dawn
Hosmer (@DawnHosmer7) wrote three short tweets
to let us know she had received some terrible news.
Update: after tons of testing & a biopsy, the doctors
believe I have Stage 4 breast cancer that has spread
to my spine, my liver, my lymph nodes, & my brain
stem. We will not know the best treatment until the
biopsy comes back. I want to be open about this b/c
it's important.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me, said
prayers, and sent love. I feel the love & concern -
it means the world to me. I may not be able to respond
to every message but please know I see them & they
matter. I will continue to update as I go through all
of this.
I'm terrified & overwhelmed but determined to fight
w/everything I have in me (which may mean writing &
reading are on hold for a while). Please keep the
love & prayers coming. My family desperately needs
them. I have several appts in the upcoming days which
will give direction.
This news has rocked the community to its core, and
has provoked an incredible response of love and
support as demonstrated by the message from Beth
Anderson.
Good morning, I've got something really hard to talk
about this morning. Dawn Hosmer, who's an incredibly
supportive member of the community and a really good
friend to me and a lot of others, she's a
psychological thriller writer who's written 'Bits and
Pieces' along with other excellent books. It looks
like she has stage four breast cancer, and it's spread
to her lymph nodes, her liver, her brain stem and her
spine from what they can tell right now.
She just found out within the last couple of days.
She has a husband and four kids, three of them grown,
one of them a teenager still at home, and she's ready
to fight this, but it's going to be a big fight. So,
we have a
GoFundMe
so that at least we can make the financial side of
this a little bit less stressful for her family, that
link is in my bio and I know anything at all that you
can give will be so appreciated by her.
Dawn, we are fighting with you.
I tried to count the number of replies Dawn had
received in response to her original tweet, but
there were so many, and the number kept increasing.
Dawn has very courageously voiced her gratitude in
her own video.
I am so touched by all the support that you guys
have shown me, through your messages, through your
GoFundMe
donations, I... I feel so loved.
I... Yesterday I felt defeated and broken and was
crying tears of worry and pain. Today I am crying
tears of joy.
It has nothing to do with dollar amounts, it has
to do with the fact that I feel seen and supported,
and loved, and I am so, so grateful.
Thank you all so much. I need you. I need your
support and I need your prayers.
Thank you.
A short thread
This little thread struck a chord with me as it is a
tale based on a subject I once researched for a
NaNoWriMo project, which was a SciFi story, yet it
touched on the earliest migrations of man.
@ReyFarer1.
Using the #SatSplat theme.
I WAS THERE in the endless winter when the First
People crossed the great ice bridge.
They fled the old world, hunted by dark, greedy
spirits - things of endless hunger.
I watched the glow of their fires, the brief
flicker of their lives.
I heard their prayers, and I answered.
I came forth, blizzard-cloaked, clad in white dread.
My roar was the wind over the mountain, the cracking
of ancient ice.

If anyone doubts the validity of belonging to the
community they probably don't know people like Dawn
and Beth who make the sense of belonging so real, and
they may never truly understand the meaning of
'community' as it is used in this instance.
Let's all do what we can to maintain the spirit of
this wonderful community by being as supportive as we
can. The
GoFundMe
links work, use them if you can.

My war dance spread terror in their foes.
My claws were as scythes through wheat.
The People praised me and carved my image in mammoth
tusk.
They gave me sacred names, and for years uncounted
they sang them to the stars on the longest night.
Time passed.
Their presence took the spear from my hand, and I
slept.
I dreamed the world of ice passed away, and The
People scattered on the wind.
