    Walker

"Chard was dead. His evening meal of roast chicken, untouched."

Thus starts this murder mystery set in the environment of the local pond and its surroundings.

The tale involves the three elements suggested by members of the writing community on the bird site. They wanted a combination of themes: the murder/mystery, fantasy and survival aspects.

And so the tale was written, one tweet at a time, following the various VSS365 prompts provided throughout the period in which the tale was written.

When it was completed, the petitioners expressed their satisfaction at the inclusion of their chosen themes!

    Wordsmith

A natural distrust of politicians, their lies, their machinations, cruelty and greed has led the Wordsmith to a campaign of attrition against the powerful, the greedy and corrupt.

His nom de plume - Wordsmith - was bestowed on him by a rare breed. A press reporter who had the foresight to understand the purpose of each of the snippets revealing obvious, but ignored, malfeasance.

As those most threatened attempt to counter his actions, he changes his methods, records and publishes every new level of violence, degradation, cruelty and mean-spirited behaviour.

It would appear circumstances have overtaken this tale - both in the unchecked lawlessness of the politicians and in the degradation of the forces of law and order.

This should be finished and published under "current affairs" instead of political fiction/drama.

    Dark Path

Whenever a soldier is lost, the military are quick to care for their families, but the motivation is not as pure as it might seem. Of special interest are those widows who are pregnant at the time they are widowed.

Or, more specifically, their unborn children.

Once the children are born they are given a course of treatment under the guise of curing a genetic ailment.

But... there is no ailment. It is no cure.

The purpose of the treatement is to perform genetic modification experiments to attempt to create the perfect soldier. Bestial, strong and quick to violence, they are to be the backbone of the military's might.

This is the nightmare of the project aptly named - 'DARK PATH'.

    Page 1

    DARK PATH

But the true horror only begins in adolescence, when self-control and patience are eroded and the violent, bestial nature of the human psyche is unleashed.

    Demonic

Kids! They'll play with anything and mess about having fun at any time and with anything.

But they played with something that should have been left where it had been found. A tablet unearthed at the turn of the 18th Century was their toy, and they'd even found a translation of the text.

The ritual was to have been nonsense, just a bit of a scare for the faint-hearted, but the reality they unleashed ended their short lives.

An ancient demon has been released from the depths of hell; it's pleasure the torture, suffering and death of innocents.

The police officer investigating is having a bad day, and the only glimmer of hope is the arrival of a strange, intuitive individual, who knows of hidden and unspoken things.

It is then that the detective is told that his perpetrator is no mere human. The embodiment of evil, a demon has been released from its eternal incarceration by its first victims.

    Page 1

    DEMONIC

The only way to defeat the demon is to ally himself with the demon's most loyal servant.

It is then that it becomes clear to the detective that the man standing before him is not who he seems.

    Skylands

Skates Chambold is one of a number of technicians on Banhba, the Skyland named after the celtic goddess, and though busy, life in general seems pretty good.

But the failing of the systems, both governmental and technical, become too obvious to be ignored when a colleague is killed in an ‘accident’ inside one of the huge turbines that keep the Skyland floating above the clouds it creates.

Then, when it appears that Skates is to be blamed for the colleague’s death, there is no other choice but to descend to the ‘underworld’, the lower decks of the floating city where society’s rejects are banished.

The Skyland is in danger of falling from the skies as much-needed spare parts are no longer being produced.

An unexpected ally provides the means to descend below the clouds where it may be possible to find someone to produce the much needed replacements.

    Page 1

    SKYLANDS

Departure and descent are rushed, and made more dangerous by the lack of practice in using the Skyland’s shuttles.

Thus begins a journey of discovery...

    An Ode To Authors

    You write your story
    in a blaze of glory
and think it's ready to go.
    Don't lose your smile
    but stop a while
to hear things you need to know.

    The race is won
    but you ain't done
there's so much more to do.
    You'll go wild
    just like a child
and your whole world'll turn blue.

    Not just sad
    it'll drive you mad
when you start the editing work.
    It'll be tough
    the going rough
but t'ain't nothing you can shirk.

    Don't walk away
    'cause that don't pay.
Hold on, wait a minute, look...
    The time you waste
    with cut and paste
is worth it to create your book!

    In The Void

I am the susurrus of whispers in the void.

    I neither come nor go.

    I have no beginning.

    I have no end.

I am ever present behind the screams.

I am the one that listens.

I am the one who answers.

    I am the silent one.

    I am now.

    I am here.

    I am the unknowable.

    I am the unknown.

    For Authors Of Fantasy

Within your mind there lies a path

that leads, with awe and wonder,

past mighty Lords and ugly beasts,

    through darkness rent asunder.

Noble knights that strive for good

to save their world once more

    from darker times and evil ways;

    producing order built on law.

Fear naught that leaps out from beyond

    though terror, dread and fear

assault you from all sides at once

    redemption is ever near.

The Evil one, the common foe,

is like to be brought down,

and we shall all rejoice once more

at the saving of the Crown.

May all your demons be imaginary…
