Famously Unknown

Is it even possible to be famously unknown? Ask your questions discreetly around this guy...

#Vss365 (#worthy)

Rarely feel like I have a #worthy opponent.
Only been challenged a few times.
Maximized my craft.
I'm the most sought-after assassin in the world.
Quarter to half a million per elimination.
Still have not been identified.
Not bad for an orphan boy from Haiti.

From Archaeology
to
Ancient Script Writings

I have recently met a rather interesting lady on Twitter and, no, I am not talking about dating. Rita Roberts is a retired Archaeologist living, and working on ancient Minoan pottery, on the the island of Crete, Greece. In recent years she gained her first Diploma. She is now at University level hoping to gain a Batchelor's degree.

Because I was interested in ancient pottery I enrolled in an evening class run by Henry Sandon. Henry was one of the hosts of the UK T.V. Program "Antiques Road Show" and his lectures were about pottery and porcelain from the modern day right back to Roman times. It just so happened that was my favourite period in history, and, after seeing the epic film "Ben Hur" my enthusiasm for archaeology began.

In 1980 I telephoned the nearest archaeology department, which was Worcester in England, to volunteer and I was immediately accepted.

When the head of the department found out I had knowledge of ancient Roman pottery I was enrolled into the Finds Department, where I was able to study the pottery as far back as the Neolithic period. This was one of the most exciting times of my life.

The dig site at this time was the archaeology of the Droitwich Salt Industry where pottery from most ancient times have been found, besides many other interesting items such as leather shoes from the mid-18th century, medieval wooden implements used for bringing salt to the edge of the pan with other kinds used for stirring the brine during boiling, and even a silver penny of Alfred the Great circa AD875 - AD880.

The picture above shows a reconstruction of an Iron Age Salt working scene. Based on excavations at the Old Bowling Green site.

We even found gold coins like the one illustrated to the right, but it was the pottery I was mostly interested in even though I had to catalogue all items found.

There was a special pot called a Briquetage which was used to store salt. In total I worked 10 years for Hereford and Worcester Archaeology.

Upon retirement I immigrated to the island of Crete where, not far from my village, there was a study centre. I couldn't resist paying a visit. Once again I was hooked because I now wanted to learn about the Bronze Age Minoan and Mycenaean cultures and their pottery. I immediately volunteered to work part time.

My background was enough to be accepted, and it has since taken me 10 years to achieve a working knowledge of Ancient Greek pottery which has now led me to the study of the Minoan and Mycenaean Ancient script writings called Linear A and Linear B.

I have completed the Mycenaean Linear B study and am now in the process of learning the Minoan Linear A.

The picture above shows some Linear B writing. The top line translates as 'Rams 78', and the bottom line 'Tano onato' (onato is a lease field). "Tanos has 78 rams on a lease field".

To some, archaeology is not a very interesting subject, and for others, learning a new language is too hard. Can you imagine what you might discover written in a language that has been dead for centuries? It conjours up some very interesting possibilities, doesn't it?

Many thanks to Rita (@cumtudu) for providing me with the content.

Bleak Hill Park

Appropriate weather for the day on which to take a photograph of 'Bleak Hill' Park. A name that, when backed up by snow on the ground and grey skies, inspires grim 'Victorian' era thoughts.

Greatest Compliment

Food for thought, or simply sound advice?

Submission by @TSeitzgolf

Is it not the greatest compliment ever to say
I want to take my time getting to know you
All of you
The real you
Everything you like
Don't like
Wants
Desires
Silly stories with friends from school
Your fears
Your first kiss

Most of all
I want to know your future
Your last kiss

L'amour

A very clear declaration, no matter which language you might choose to use

Submission by @FoundinShadows

Français / French

Je veux juste que tu saches que rien ne pourra jamais se rapprocher de l'amour que je ressens pour toi.

Anglais / English

I just want you to know that nothing can ever come close to the love I feel for you.

If on a winter's night a traveller
Alights at your door, unrequited
Will you share your candlelight
Give some hope and festive cheer
Offer a welcome no other can rival
Save summer with its light and warmth?

Information Lists

I am creating an indexed list of information that the various members of the community may find useful.

The lists should provide a wide variety of information from suicide helpline numbers to #hashtag prompts. Editors, Artists, Graphics designers, alternative software, writing utilities, beta readers, etc.

Newcomers and old hands alike, sometimes find themselves asking questions that have been asked and answered so many times before. I hope to make finding those answers easier by listing the information so many of us ask for.

If you would like to be included on these lists contact @Owen_G_Richards and have a chat about what you'd like to include in the entry for your particular talent.

You can help others by allowing me to help you by providing constant visibility on the lists.

NO FEES. NO MEMBERSHIP. NO MAILING LISTS. Just your entry visible to those who may be interested in your skills or expert knowledge.

A Friend's Comfort

Confused, struggling, frustrated... what you need is someone who gets you, and will stay with you until things get better.

Submission by @LostInabook1

I know it's hard right now...
Being covered in shadows
But surrounded by light.
Don't fret,
Bring the night inside,
We'll hide
Until you're ready.
Then I'll hang the stars
And soon,
We'll bask
And bathe in the glow
Of the moon.

A Quick Seduction

Somehow, I don't think this is the one for you. Don't you agree?

#Vss365 (#shift)

My mood #shifted. I had too rapidly been seduced by his guile, dreamy smile & pert buttocks. It was all a farce. When he released very melodious vapors from his posterior, I let my legs carry me out of there in a hurry.

He was NOT the vegan he claimed to be.

Not Jack, but Jagger

There is truth in some, but not in all proverbs, as this item clearly demonstrates!

Submission by @Bofferson

#Vss365 (#gravity)

Mick Jagger tried to stop himself falling all the way down the side of the hill. He used his face, then his arse, and finally his knees, all without any degree of success.

Finally #gravity gave up, and he came to a stop, muddy and covered in moss.

'Lying bloody proverb!'

Naivete

was smooth

were crude
I wasn't unkind
just unrefined
I didn't know
what moved hearts
didn't know
where to start
sometimes
I wasn't enough
'til I unlearned
what I knew
about love

& I listened
to the moon
she said different hearts
play different tunes

Grey Louries

The grey go-away-bird (Corythaixoides concolor), also known as a grey lourie or grey loerie, makes its presence known by its characteristically loud and nasal "kweh" or "go-way" calls. Great, if you're prey. Not so good if you're a predator!

ARTICLES FOR FUTURE EDITIONS

There are certain areas of the writing community that are under-represented here, which is mainly due to my lack of involvement in those areas. That does not mean that these genres/areas/topics are excluded. If you have any articles tweets, stories, anecdotes to share then do, please, submit them for consideration.

After the Dec 19th there will be no more editions of
"A Writer's Chronicle"...
until Jan 16th, 2022.

Feel free to let me know of any notable tweets, artwork, photos, videos, incidents of interest, and I'll check them out for inclusion in the first edition of the new year.

Treasure Trove

It is quite surprising what can be found hidden away in old houses.

uncovered from beneath the damaged floorboards
a little, wooden treasure chest
- old and battered, like the house itself

inside of it a collection of things: stone marbles, a lock of hair, a dried flower, vintage postcards, faded photographs

#VssMagic Hashtag

I noticed this hashtag a little while ago and whilst I am not a fantasy specialist, I do enjoy playing along. Maybe it's just an opportunity to strengthen my 'mystical' and 'magical' capabilites?

Submission by @TitaniaTempest

#VssMagic

The mundane world never quite seems to have enough sparkle, does it? That's why #VssMagic - a daily writing prompt - was started.

From dashing heroes to fantastic beasts, and every spell in between, the prompts often have a sword and sorcery bent.

But #vssmagic is by no means exclusive to fantasy writers - all are welcome, and if you have a Very Short Story or poem to share, we'd be enchanted to see it!

New daily prompt words are posted in weekly batches (usually on a Friday or Saturday) and pinned to the @vssmagic page for easy reference.

Know Your Limits

#AtreyasVerse (#empathic entity)

you ask too much
of this golem
magic made animate
a spell-spun soul
sung into being from darkness
incomplete
and unwhole
run far from this nightmare
find a more empathic entity
one whose heart is made
of something more than
mud and stone.
